Blepharoplasty Santa Monica

Blepharoplasty

Ralph A. Massey, MD Santa Monica & Encino, CA

Blepharoplasty

Loose extra skin on the upper eyelids or bags and wrinkles of the lower lids can make you look tired and add years to your appearance. This can be corrected with a safe cosmetic surgery called blepharoplasty. This surgery can rejuvenate your eyes and take away that sleepy, tired look.

Dr. Massey has perfected an “electrode blepharoplasty” that can be performed under the safety of local anesthesia, with practically no down time. The procedure take about 45 minutes and patients can usually be back to full activity after one week.

For upper blepharoplasty, incisions are made to remove skin and fat before being stitched back together to create a crease. For a lower blepharoplasty, incisions are made on the eyelid’s inside region or just below the lash line so that the excess skin and fat can be removed without leaving any visible scars.

Good Candidates for Blepharoplasty

Ideal candidates for such a procedure are those who:

  • Have droopy eyelids
  • Have bags under their eyes
  • Are in good health without suffering from any chronic illnesses that can put them at risk
  • Have realistic expectations of what the procedure can achieve and are optimistic about its outcome

Your medical history will be collected at your initial consultation and you’ll get to discuss your expectations from the procedure. A physical examination will also be carried out, including an examination of your peripheral vision so that any insurance claim you make may be supported.

Photos of your eyes will be taken from different angles to plan the procedure better. You will also have to stop taking certain medications that can increase your risk of bleeding during the procedure and quit smoking in the weeks leading up to the surgery and during recovery so that you may heal faster.

Recovery After a Blepharoplasty

During the recovery period, it’s normal to have some bruising and swelling but using an ice pack over your eyes can help with this. Your eyelids may also feel numb and you need to avoid rubbing them or straining them with strenuous physical activities. Eye drops and ointments may be prescribed to help you clean your eyes when needed.

You should also protect your eyes from the sun and wind by wearing darkly tinted sunglasses and sleep with your head in a raised position. While the swelling typically goes away in about a week, it may take you a month to see the full results from your surgery.
